Usrah 2 || Getting to Know Khusyu'

Allah Almighty says in the Noble Quran: “It is the believers who are successful: those who are humble in their prayer.” (Quran, 23:1-2)

Muslims pray five times a day. Salah is the 2nd most important pillar of Islam and has been made compulsory on every Muslim. Salah is ought to be offered with “Khushu” to gain the actual reward and more hefty amount of blessings from Almighty Allah.

Khushu is an Arabic word. Literally, it refers to humbleness, submissiveness, and gentleness in heart due to the consciousness of Allah while offering Salah.

Salah is the key to success in both this world and in the Hereafter. If this key is not looked after, it won't be able to unlock the doors that lead to the goods of this life and the hereafter. To achieve success, we have to observe the quality of our prayers. No doubt, when our Salah is in good condition, we’ll notice that all the other life affairs also naturally fall into their right places with ease. Times of ease become more joyful and times of difficulties become bearable.

Why Khushu'?

Khushu is an important element of Salah as the value of the Prayer is directly related to the depth of intensity the servant of Allah can achieve during its performance. If anyone wants to be among those who are successful, then they have to try to achieve the noble aspect of Khushu in their prayers.

Allah (SWT) says: “Most certainly those Believers have attained true success: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.” (Quran, 23:1)

It is important to realize that the state of Khushu is a state of true presence in the Salah. Khushu helps one connect deeply and truly with Allah.

How do I achieve Khushu' in Salah?

  • Understanding the words we are reciting from the Quran, knowing the meanings of the words uttered in prayer. This helps us to focus.

  • Making dua in sujud or after completing your prayer. Allah Almighty loves those who pray and make Dua to Him.

  • Reciting different Surahs in our prayers. The more we know from the Holy Quran, the more we allow Allah Almighty to speak to us.

  • Treating the salah that is about to be performed as the one to be questioned by Allah on the Day of Judgment or the last prayer.

  • Confiding everything in front of Allah Almighty.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

“There is no Muslim man who, when the time for a prescribed prayer comes, he does wudu properly, has the proper attitude of khushu, and bows properly, but it will be an expiation for all his previous sins, so long as they were not major sins (kabeerah). And this is the case for life” (Reported by Muslim, 1/206, no. 7/4/2)

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “My joy has been made in prayer.” So whoever finds their joy in prayer, how can they bear to look for joy anywhere else, or to keep away from it?
